Virginia Tech's 2010 Solar Decathlon Europe SIP Project Profile

Virginia Tech's LUMENHAUS

The U.S. Department of Energy Solar Decathlon challenges 20 university teams from around the world to design, build, and operate solar-powered houses that are affordable, energy-efficient, and attractive. The 2010 overall winner was Virginia Tech’s LUMENHAUS home. LUMENHAUS is a zeroenergy home that is completely powered by the sun. Choices of materials and components are based on the basic requirements of environmental conservation and energy use, as well as the longevity of each product. R-Control SIPs (Structural Insulated Panels) were a perfect fit. R-Control SIPs provide an energy efficient envelope system, reduce air leakage, and help control and lower heating and cooling costs. They also provide superior strength and design flexibility.

R-Control SIPs are environmentally friendly. The structural skins of R-Control Structural Insulated Panels are made from renewable wood resources, and the Foam-Control EPS with Perform Guard core is termite resistant, contains no CFCs, HCFCs, HFCs, or formaldehyde, and is recyclable.
